A colostomy is a temporary or permanent surgical procedure that redirects a portion of your large intestine through your abdominal wall so as to bypass the damaged part of your colon. Solid waste will then be expelled through the stomach into a pouch.

The proper pouching system for a colostomy is a wafer and a pouch. The wafer can be flat or convex, a bowl like backing to help push out stoma for proper drainage. The pouch can be drainable or closed end. Can come in a one-piece appliance or a two-piece system.
